Honours Degrees

The University of South Australia offers two models of honours programs. First, an honours degree is a separate, stand-alone one-year program of advanced studies for students who demonstrate a high level of achievement on completion of their ordinary degree program. Second, a degree with honours is of four years or more duration and includes a minimum of one year of advanced studies for students who demonstrate a high level of achievement in the initial years of the program.

Honours students learn advanced research, writing, and communication skills. Honours degrees are viewed favourably by employers, and successful completion entitles students to enrol in Masters and PhD programs.

Masters by Research programs

Masters by Research programs have the objective of training higher degree by research (HDR) students in: analysing the literature, relevant artefacts and debate in the substantive area of the thesis topic at an advanced level; research methodology and techniques and in their critical evaluation, appropriate to the field of study; and the application of such methodology, by conducting a specified program of research under appropriate supervision.

PhD Research programs

PhD programs provide training and education with the objective of producing graduates with the capacity to conduct research independently at a high level of originality and quality. By the end of the degree program, the PhD student ought to be capable of conceiving, designing and carrying to completion a research program without supervision.

The purpose of the PhD is to advance knowledge and/or the application of knowledge through the preparation of a substantial piece of work which represents a significant contribution to a particular field of study.
